A Sturdy Family Root System

I recently attended the military burial of my older brother, Bob. After a long battle with several illnesses, he died a few days before his 91st birthday.

The ceremony was intimate, with a small group of family and close friends present. It included a three-gun salute, playing of Taps and the presentation of the United States flag. Afterward, the family gathered at his home to reconnect and share stories.

Although the family deeply felt his loss, the gathering was more of a celebration of his life than a time of mourning. He provided great strength for our family root system, and his influence touched each family member in a different, yet impactful way. So, instead of sorrow, the gathering was filled with laughter, storytelling, and fond memories. It was a time to recall events in his life with photos, keepsakes, and a video.

Reflecting on my brother’s life, I realized Bob’s formula for building a sturdy family root system:

  • Listen to and serve others.
  • Seek innovation to solve problems.
  • Encourage others to take responsibility for self.
  • Face and resolve conflicts.
  • Create and maintain rich relationships.
  • Let others know you care deeply for them.

It takes serious reflection along with intentional action in order to strengthen a family root system.  While the formula will be unique for each family, the opportunity, and the obligation is universal.  It is up to each of us to ensure that our family bonds become strong, remain strong and are resilient as we pass them on to the next generation.
